The Miner’s Kernel
Grades 1-3
Chapter 1

Centuries ago, legends said, the planet was filled with fine cities and wonderful country cottages. There had been sporting events and dance contests and little cakes to go with the soft drinks.
Miners were society’s champions. They would struggle home from distant reaches of this small, rocky world, bringing wealth and new ideas.
But then the mines gave out and the Great Freeze set in. Now, Zegrow was a cold, dark world ravaged by frigid winds and covered with snow mounds and frozen sand dunes.

Not a town, really. Just some run-down buildings. A post on the edge of town read,

Hoping he was where he wanted to be, the miner sleeved further down the post. Mileage markers appeared. At the bottom of the post was a much smaller sign. It said End.

The miner, having learned the hard way that systems could go bad, committed the sign to memory – in his suit but also in his brain.

With a clanging of bells, the gate came down, startling him. On the crossing bar was a sign:

He felt foolish at waiting for a train that was never coming. He adjusted his heart rate monitor. With a nervous chuckle, he walked around the gate.
The lights of the nearest building were on, as if its power bank and that of the railroad guard were connected. He trudged into town. He paused to read the sign above the building with the lit-up windows.

And on the right, the sign on the edge of town was repeated
