Task 3.8.4 – Small Groups

The information below is in alphabetical order. Put the sentences in each set in the order that things probably happened.

Finding the map and the treasure chest

I dug a hole down about three feet.

I found a little box in the pirate chest.

I ran home to get a shovel.

I used the shovel to open the lock.

My metal detector screeched.

Meeting the little man made of mirrors

He sat up, stretched, and yawned.

He was covered with mirrors.

“I’m Chris,” I said.

The little man put out his hand to me.

We shook hands.

Talking to the little man of mirrors

“Back in 1672,” he said.

“Blackbeard put me here.”

“How’d you get in here?” I asked.

“What year is it?” he asked.

He said, “I’ve been asleep for over three hundred years!”

I told him.

A crowd gathers

“Alfred de la Hoya,” he said.  “From Madrid.”

“That’s the capital of Spain,” one of the watchers said.

A couple of them carried surfboards.

I realized I did not know his name.

I told them, “This is my new friend.  His name is—”

Most were college kids in swimsuits.

Soon a crowd gathered around us.

The man made of mirrors creates horror

“You belong to me now,” he told them.

He looked around at them.

His mirrors flashed

People fell back, some to their knees, clawing at their eyes and screaming.

Then one day I dug up a tiny man made of mirrors. I was walking home from school.  I went along the beach. Using my metal detector, I came across a glass bottle with a metal top. It was under the sand. I uncovered it and found a treasure map inside!

The paper was so old it was crinkly. It said a treasure was buried in the grassy area near the beach, at what is now called Rocky Point. I hurried home for a shovel and went back. My heart pounded with excitement.

I dug up a treasure chest. It had gold trim and a large silver lock. I tried to pry the lock loose with the shovel.

With a screech, it broke open!  There was a little box inside. I opened the lid to find a tiny man made of mirrors. He wore a top hat and a formal suit.

I fell back in fear. Sunlight bounced off the mirrors. “About time someone found me,” he said. “I’ve been waiting for over three hundred years.”
