Summary Sentence Review

Grades 1 - 3

You now have the summary of your story. It should be one sentence long, like this:

I had a problem with a man made of mirrors I found in a treasure chest because he turned everyone into pirates.

The summary breaks into two sections:

What Statement Why Statement

The What Statement

The What Statement tells what the story is about. It is made up of:

  • The left-hand idea (LH)
  • The verb phrase (VP)
  • The right-hand idea (RH)

Old information (Hero): I

Verb Phrase:  had a problem with

New Information (Troublemaker): a tiny man made of mirrors I found in a treasure chest.

Why Statement

In a story, the Why Statement explains the problem the troublemaker caused.

It connects to the What Statement using the word “because.”
