LESSON 0.1
The Basics
Grades 1-3
The Most Important Part of Writing
Have you ever been bored by a book, TV show, or movie? That’s usually because the writer didn’t remember that two basic things about writing:
- The subject is what the writing is about.
- Good subjects are the most important part of writing.
In fact, if you know how to find a good subject, the rest of learning to write is easy.
Write for Adult Strangers
Your mom and dad have probably told you never to take candy from adult strangers. And that’s very good advice!
When we write, however, we write for adult strangers – not for children, teachers, friends, or family.
We don’t write for people we know. It’s easier to talk to them or email or text them.
We also don’t write for children. You’re learning to write for when you’re in high school, college, or the workplace. You need to start practicing now.
Adult Readers
Adults work at their jobs, take care of your family, do housework, and work in the community.
They’re busy. They don’t have time to read about things they already know about.
They also don’t want to read about things that don’t interest them – what you did last night or where you vacationed. They’re strangers. They don’t want to know about you. They’ve got their own families.
The Subject Must Be New to Readers
Subjects that are New (notice that it is always capitalized) are ones that –
- Readers probably don’t know much about.
- Readers are likely interested in.
